The Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2019 event later this month will also mark the 10th anniversary of the Galaxy series. However, Samsung’s journey within the mobile industry has begun even way before the original Samsung Galaxy S that was launched in 2001.
In fact, it all started in 1988 with the release of Samsung’s first ever phone that the company developed purely on its own, the SH-100. A few later, the company then established the AnyCall branding (via SH-770) which is a name that early mobile phone adopters out there might have encountered back in the 1990s to early 2000s.
Smartphones these days can provide great multimedia experience with much ease but back then, you need to find specific phones even just to enjoy a mere MP3 playback function. Samsung is the first to deliver that very capability through SPH-M2500 (below left) in 1999 that able to support up to around 10 songs via its 32MB storage.
That amount of storage is quite miniscule even when compared to modern smartphones; even with Samsung’s current entry-level smartphone lineup, the Galaxy J series. Music playback capability is not the only thing that the Korean giant has worked on though as Samsung has also produced SCH-M220 (above right), the first phone in the world capable of receiving TV broadcast in 1999 which then followed by the world’s first satellite DMB phone, SCH-B100 in 2005.
A camera is a staple feature of today’s smartphones and as one of the industry’s leading, it is certainly something that Samsung has been dabbled with for quite some time. In fact, the company has been involved in the camera phone industry for around 19 years with its first camera phone, the SPH-V200 that was released in 2000.
Fast forward few years later, Samsung then began to offer optical zoom capability on a mobile phone with its SPH-S2300 in 2004. In the same year, the company also brought forward the world’s first 10MP camera phone through its SCH-B600.
Many are expecting Samsung to reveal a foldable phone this year especially after the company showed off its Infinity Flex Display a few months ago at the Samsung Developers Conference. It might seem quite a gamble but truth to be told, Samsung has been coming out with devices that feature out of ordinary form factor for quite some time such as the SPH-WP10 watch phone and SCH-V500 that comes with a rotating screen.
The current era of Samsung’s mobile innovation certainly started with the release of the original Galaxy S in 2010 which merged together powerful performance, beautiful display, and great multimedia experience. It was then followed by the first Galaxy Note device in 2011 which delivered big screen experience that is enhanced S Pen stylus. As the company further improved both Galaxy series with new iterations every year, Samsung continues to maintain its status quo as one of the leaders within the smartphone industry.
Things certainly have progressed quite far for the company since the release of SH-100 31 years ago but rest assured, Samsung is certainly not done yet as the company will be unveiling its latest and greatest Galaxy devices at the Samsung Galaxy Unpacked 2019 in San Francisco later this week.
