According to a new patent, Apple may be exploring letting users swap out the arms of the its AR glasses. These arms will be the ones that house different features that the AR glasses will be able to carry out. This will allow users to customise the AR glasses as they need. One example given was a high battery capacity for outdoor use at the cost of other features, or higher resolution when used at home, at the cost of battery life. The other is a far simpler choice between better battery life or a sleeker look.

It’s an interesting way to make AR glasses, to be sure. But beyond a customisable battery life, it remains to be seen what other options that be added to the range of AR applications that can be swapped. Perhaps the ability to interact with whatever is being projected will also be one of the modular options. Of course, as with patents, this may not actually be what the Apple AR glasses will end up being. Besides, it’s still a long way before the company is expected to unveil such a product anyway.
