The decision to support Foldables was announced during the Android Developer Summit. Google says that it was enhancing the Android OS to be able to take advantage of the new medium with “as little work as necessary”. According to The Verge, one of the steps that Google is taking to do this is by getting developers to work on an existing API called “screen continuity”.
For context, screen continuity is the API used by Android devices that automatically detects when the screen size on your phone has changed. Mainly from rotating your device from portrait into landscape mode. In the case of foldables, the API would be tweaked to accommodate for the new display medium. Besides Samsung, companies such as Huawei and LG have reportedly been working on their own devices with a flexible display. Even brands outside of the Android ecosystem – such as Microsoft – have also been working on its own multi-display foldable device. However, as things currently stands, few of these companies actually have anything tangible to show beyond the odd prototype or two. (Source: The Verge)
