Specs-wise, the Nova 5 Pro features an all-glass back panel and a 6.39-inch OLED display, complete with a teardrop notch. The display is a Full HD+ panel with a resolution of 1080 x 2340 pixels. Further, the Nova 5 Pro’s display also comes with a built-in in-display fingerprint scanner, and also comes with TUV certification and support for DCI-P3. Beneath the hood, the Nova 5 Pro rocks Huawei’s top of the line Kirin 980 SoC, has 8GB RAM, and up to 256GB of internal storage. Unlike the P30 Pro, the Nova 5 Pro does come with a microSD card slot, allowing users to expand the storage if deemed necessary. On the software front, the phone runs on the latest Android 9 Pei OS, with Huawei’s EMUI 9.1.1 running over it. Powering all this hardware is a 3500mAh battery.
Over to the cameras, the main camera of the Nova 5 Pro is a quad-camera setup. It features Sony’s 49MP IMX586 sensor, a 16MP superwide lens, a 2MP depth sensor, and 2MP macro lens. Adding value to these cameras, the Nova 5 Pro’s camera software also carries support for a Super Night Mode, Portrait mode, AI scene recognition, as well as beautification features. At the front, the selfie camera hidden in the teardrop notch is a 32MP f/2.0 sensor. Connectivity for Nova 5 Pro includes dual 4G VoLTE, Wi-Fi 802.11ac, Bluetooth 5.0, a USB-C port, and surprisingly, a 3.5mm audio jack.
Pricing for the Huawei Nova 5 Pro starts at 2999 Yuan (~RM1810) for the 8GB+128GB variant, while the 8GB+256GB variant goes for 3399 Yuan (~RM2051). The phone will also be available in four different colours: Dilemma Forest, Midsummer, Purple, Coral Orange, and Bright Black. At the time of writing, Huawei has not announced a local availability or pricing for the Nova 5 Pro. Alongside the Nova 5 Pro, Huawei also announced the Nova 5 and Nova 5i. The Nova 5 is essentially a mirror image of the Pro variant, save one difference. Instead of a Kirin 980 SoC, the Nova 5 is fitted with Huawei’s new 7nm Kirin 810 SoC.
The other phone, the Nova 5i, has essentially been described as the Chinese version of the P20 Lite, save for a couple of differences, naturally. It runs on the mid-range Kirin 710 SoC, has up to 8GB RAM, and 128GB of expandable storage. It also has a quad camera main system at the rear, but unlike the other two Nova 5 variants, neither of them is the 48MP Sony IMX586 sensor. It also doesn’t have an in-display fingerprint scanner. Instead, the fingerprint scanner is still physical, and is also still located at the back of the phone.
