The PMCO SEA League started in September with 24 teams from Thailand, Malaysia, Indonesia and Vietnam who had all proven themselves as the best teams in their respective countries. The SEA League consisted of 4 weeks of play where these teams competed to decide who would be able to advance to the SEA Championship. The Thai teams in the competition proved to be the most consistently dominant, as ILLUMINATE The Murder, Mega.Conqueror and RRQ Athena all finished in the top 4. However, it was the Indonesian team Bigetron RA who was the most impressive, as they held a commanding spot in the first place of the table throughout the SEA League. Of the 5 Malaysian teams that participated in the SEA League, only 2 were able to qualify for the SEA Championship. Yoodo Gank and Victorious In Play. Holding true to their status as the directly invited Malaysian team, Yoodo Gank finished the SEA League as the highest ranked Malaysian team, finishing 13th place in the table overall. Their performance throughout the SEA League was decent albeit inconsistent, but it was still enough to net them qualification for the SEA Championship while also granting them the confirmed spot in the PMCO Global Finals which was reserved for whichever Malaysian team performed the best at the SEA League. Meanwhile, Victorious in Play qualified for the SEA Championship by finishing in 16th place – the very last slot in the table before the cutoff point which was hotly contested by a bunch of other teams including the other Malaysian teams which didn’t make the cut – AROV Esports, Bapak Ah Esports and Team Secret.
The Malaysian teams had some highlights during the SEA League, but the final results also reveal that there is a significant skill gap between the Malaysian teams and the top teams in SEA. The SEA Championship will commence on the 2nd of November, so at least Yoodo Gank and Victorious in Play will have a decent amount of time to review their performance during the SEA League and make the necessary adjustments in order to achieve a better result during the SEA Championships. Given that Malaysia was assigned a guaranteed slot at the PMCO Global Finals by the tournament organisers, our Malaysian representatives will be under significant pressure to prove that they are worthy of that spot and make the Malaysian PUBG fans proud.
