Mid-Credits Scene and Mr Mind
After the film, we see Dr Sivana locked away in solitary confinement. He madly scribbles on the walls of his cell, looking for a way to regain the powers he’s lost. When his writing tool breaks, Sivana loses his mind and cries out angrily. His cries do not go unnoticed however, as he hears a voice taunting him, telling him that there are other ways to learn about magic beyond the Wizard. He sees a caterpillar with a voice modulator standing in a hole in the wall. That bug just so happens to be the most powerful bug in the universe, Mr Mind! But who on earth is Mr Mind?
In the comics, Mr Mind is a gifted reality warper and a ferocious telepath, capable of rivalling even that of Martian Manhunter’s abilities. He is the last of his kind from the planet Venus, meaning all the psychic potential of his fallen brethren has been passed on to him. In his full form, the bug is capable of creating alternate universes! Not bad for a talking caterpillar, huh? What’s interesting though is that when Sivana asked Mr Mind “What in God’s name?”, Mind replies with “I name the gods, not the other way around.” Earlier in the film, we see several instances of the camera focusing on Mr Mind being trapped in a glass container in the Rock of Eternity. Did Mr Mind play a part in the Wizard Shazam gaining his many, many powers? Did Mr Mind help Shazam somehow gather the powers of these gods and beings? He did say he “named” the gods and the word Shazam is an acronym for multiple ones. Frankly, I love the idea of a magic caterpillar possibly being one of the most dangerous villains in the DCEU! It’s absolutely bonkers. The scene ends with Mr Mind telling Sivana that “the seven realms are about to be ours.” Although it hasn’t been officially confirmed, I’m gonna take a wild guess that he’s talking about The Seven Magiclands that were mentioned in this year’s Shazam! comics. In the second issue, the Shazam family finds out that the Rock of Eternity has a secret subway station with trains that lead to the Seven Magiclands. Some of the names revealed are the Earthlands (their world), the Gamelands, the Wildlands, the Darklands, the Monsterlands and the Funlands. All of which are possible locations that the Shazam family could be visiting in the next Shazam film. Looks like Shazam Is trying to establish their own wacky supernatural mythos similar to Marvel’s Thor films. In spite of the fact that Black Adam didn’t show up anywhere in the film, we did hear Sivana make mention the of sun god, Ra, who is part of the Egyptian pantheon. Within that pantheon, Black Adam draws his power from several of its members. Was Sivana in a way trying to summon the Wizard’s first champion? I guess we’ll have to wait and find out in future films.
The Second Post Credit Scene
The final scene at the end is a pretty fun one. It shows Billy, sometime before the end of the film, pretending to be able to talk to fish, much to Freddy’s annoyance. Billy pokes fun at the idea of being able to talk to sea creatures and questions how useful that power would actually be. All the while, Freddy is literally wearing an Aquaman T-Shirt. Freddy responds to Billy saying, “I don’t know? Maybe command an army of billions in the ocean?” Billy simply shrugs that off stating that “It’s not that cool.”
It’s nice to DC being able to have some self-referential fun, even with the success of Aquaman. If this is the tone they plan on maintaining with future films, then I’m in. If Aquaman was a step in the right direction, then Shazam is a giant leap. Based on everything we’ve seen so far, it seems like the film is set perhaps a few years after the events of Justice League. The commercial merchandise like Aquaman T-shirts and Batman action figures imply that these heroes have had enough time to become something of a pop culture phenomenon within the world itself. Perhaps, there’s an opening for a certain superpowered man-child to apply? Billy probably won’t though, seeing that he already has a league of his own. I would really like to see the Shazam family go up against the Justice League. That would be freaking amazing!
